Barron Park Donkeys
The Barron Park Donkeys are an establishment that has been in palo alto for around 80 years, the donkeys dubbed as palo altos local equine celebrities. The two donkeys there are Jenny and Perry. Even though two donkeys may not sound like many, it takes a group of 24 dedicated volunteers to help keep them healthy and the environment around them in good condition.
It started with an engineer, Cornelius Bol who needed something to entertain his kids, and not being able to afford a horse he bought donkeys and put them on the family pasture. The Barron Park community soon took a liking to the donkeys. The donkeys brought everyone closer and so they have been kept around until today.
The donkeys and overall area that they are in Bol park, serve as a calming escape from stressful everyday life and also shows some of the more rural culture from the past. The donkeys are very important to the Barron Park community since so many people who live there are volunteers. They want to preserve it and the culture. There are donkey handlers who help with activities such as feeding and walking them.
The area has so much value to the community, however not many people outside of it know about the donkeys since it has been there for so long, people have forgotten about it and the place has become run down. This summer I wanted to work on bringing more awareness about the donkeys by adding to the barronparkdonkeys website and redoing it’s social media page.
